A battle with two slimes in RPG Maker MV.

A battle in RPG games is commonly an encounter with at least one enemy. In most turn based RPG games, a special mode is entered when a battle starts in which players can attempt to defeat the enemy or enemies. Generally players attempt to reduce enemies' HP, or hit or health points, to zero, so that they can win the battle, and prevent their own party members from reaching zero HP so that they don't lose the battle. Losing a battle usually results in a game over state, which generally means that the player must restart from a save point. When a battle is won in most RPG games, experience points are given to party members, which can cause party members to level up.

In RPG Maker, battles can be configured in various ways. The enemies that appear in the battles can be chosen by choosing one of the set troop groups to appear in the battle. Random battles can be configured as part of the map they're in. In addition, the battle system itself can be modified internally by using scripts or plugins.
