A cutscene is a usually non-interactive portion of a game generally used to show advancements of a game's plot or to reveal a new objective to the player. Cutscenes are used extensively in most role-playing games, and also appear in many other genres of games.

Some cutscenes are pre-rendered full motion video clips, such as in the introduction of Final Fantasy VII. Most cutscenes in games are rendered in real time, and on platforms with limited storage space such as on SNES and Game Boy Advance, real-time cutscenes are almost exclusively used.

Cutscenes very in length and complexity depending on the game and the specific cutscene itself.

In RPG Maker[]

Using the Event system in RPG Maker, cutscenes can be created. Movement of events and dialog boxes can be triggered using Event commands. In later RPG Maker programs, videos can be played back as well, allowing for pre-rendered videos to be played as cutscenes.
