1998 is a story-driven RPG maker game created by averageavacado.
Plot[]
Audrey, now entering her last year of high school, swirls into a crisis as she realizes that her bitterness and contempt has prevented her from having an enjoyable childhood, and there’s not much of it left to fix that. Her cynical outlook starts to change, however, when she meets Jun, a boy from Japan who just moved into her town.
Characters[]
Audrey[]
A girl filled with pent-up hatred for her peers and her surroundings. While she doesn't like being alone, she doesn't reach people because she thinks she's superior to everyone else.
Jun[]
A calm and optimistic boy who often puts others before himself, even if it sacrifices his own well-being. Audrey is charmed by how mature and intellectual he seems (though as she knows him more, it's revealed he's not good at studying) and often compares him to a butterfly in a book she owns.
Endings[]
Ending 1: Cage[]
If Audrey made selfish decisions, she goes to visit Jun after a month of no news about him. He coldly tells her that his mother has passed away but decided not to tell Audrey because she's self-centered and never listens to him. He mockingly states that she's lonely and shuts the door on her face.
Audrey reminiscences about her book, which concludes with the little butterfly leaving the girl forever.
Ending 2: Garden[]
If Audrey didn't make selfish decisions, she goes to visit Jun after a month of no news about him. He tells her that his mother has passed away but decided not to tell Audrey because she's always wallowing in self-pity. However he admits that she's slowly changing for the better. Audrey promises to be more considerate next time and the two go to buy flowers for his mother together.
Audrey reminiscences about her book, in which the girl decides to give more freedom to the butterfly so it can be happy. The butterfly accepts the gesture and starts visiting the girl often, truly becoming friends. The story ends on a note to treat your friends well.
Ending 3: Secret Ending[]
If Audrey got the 6 secret notes, there's a bonus scene after Ending 2. Some time later, Audrey and Jun are in the cafe talking about their lives. Audrey gives him a scrapbook to commemorate their years of friendship.
Trivia[]
- It's implied in some off-comments by Jun that he's gay. Ending 3 confirms he has a boyfriend.
