Midnight Train is an episodic horror game created by Lydia using RPG Maker VX Ace. The game is focused on exploration, adventure and puzzles.
Synopsis[]
Luna is a traveller that is looking for a certain place. Suddenly, while she’s travelling in a train, the people around her disappear and the train stops in a mysterious place. She finds there a pocket clock with some instructions; she needs to find the next train before time runs out or she will be trapped in that world forever.
Game Features[]
The player moves a character through two-dimensional fields, interacting with and examining various objects. A blue music box can be seen at various places, serving as a save point.
There are two playable characters, which have different abilities. Luna focuses on exploration and stealth while Neil focuses on observation and an interrogation minigame at the middle of each chapter. There are four buildings in the dimension (Factory Building, Museum Building, Forest Building and Prison Building), with the atmosphere changing depending on it.
Characters[]
Luna Wyndell[]
A traveller looking for a certain place. She is mute and communicates with other characters using a notebook. She meets Neil in the train and protects him during dangerous situations. Luna is very strong yet reckless and tends to rely a lot on Neil.
It's later revealed she's "Serenity", the top assassin of the Black Gear organization. She joined them when she was young in order to avenge the deaths of her parents, who were killed in a terrorist attack. After realizing that killing her parents' murderer didn't give her the satisfaction she wanted, she left the organization. Because of this, she's branded as a traitor and captured in the Midnight Express.
Neil Lawton[]
Luna’s companion during the game, a gentle guy who wants to be a detective and is in the same situation as her. He’s weak, naive and panics easily, but his intelligence helps Luna with puzzles and riddles. He antagonizes Black Gear because he believes vigilantes shouldn't bring justice to criminals and they should leave it to the police instead.
It's later revealed the Midnight Express locks up criminals, regardless if they're justified or selfish. Neil's crime was to keep silent after he saw his extorsionist uncle committing a crime. Said uncle was very abusive and is the reason for Neil's crippling self-esteem.
Diana Lovelace[]
The young girl Luna and Neil encounter in the first building, right after her friend’s suicide. She quickly befriends them, but it’s turned out she poisoned Neil to take the pocket watch of either one of them. After realizing her actions, she decided to stay back and wait for the duo to rescue her.
It's later revealed the Midnight Express locks up criminals, regardless if they're justified or selfish. Diana's crime was producing medicines illegally.
Apollo Carson[]
A strange guy Luna and Neil chance upon in the second building, who actively suggests them to split up. He has trust issues and is intrigued by Luna and Neil's friendship, silently observing them through their journey. Apollo ends up warming up to them and escapes the building with them, despite losing his pocket watch years ago. Unfortunately this results in his body being reduced to an eye for breaking the rules.
It's later revealed the Midnight Express locks up criminals, regardless if they're justified or selfish. Apollo's crime was killing the major's son in self-defense.
Selene Ambrose[]
An energetic girl Luna and Neil meet in the third building. She's Luna's childhood friend, who grew up in the same orphanage as her. Selene is a famous outlaw and was friends with fellow thief Apollo. However, she plans to leave her old lifestyle behind and start a new, honest life. Despite Neil's initial mistrust of her, Selene admits she's been trapped in the building for three years and just wishes to spent time with Luna before she leaves.
It's later revealed the Midnight Express locks up criminals, regardless if they're justified or selfish. Selene was locked up for her heists.
Trivia[]
- Charlotte from Trick & Treat and Charlotte from Cadeau appear as train passengers in the prologue.
- Wendy, Lewin, Clyde and Dahlia from Aria's Story appear at the end of Chapter 4 as passerbys.
