States are special status effects that an actor or enemy can be affected with. In various RPG games they are usually refered to as "status effects," "ailments," or "buffs" and "debuffs."

In RPG Maker, new games usually come with default states such as knockout/dead, poison, sleep, and silence. Additional states can be added and the existing ones modified using the Database.

Examples of what states can do include giving HP/MP/TP regeneration or degeneration effects, the former for something like a blessing and the latter for poison like effects, boosting certain stats, preventing certain other states from taking place (for example making a character impossible to be knocked out or poisoned), disabling certain skill categories, boosting the amount of times a character can attack in the same turn, and so on.
